Individual Psychotherapy

Bright Room

I provide individual psychotherapy sessions to adults and specialize in the following presenting concerns:

  • Stress and burnout related to a variety of stressors, such as career/work stress (with specific specialty in healthcare providers and those in the tech industry), management of health conditions, caregiving, or relationship stressors

  • People pleasing and perfectionism

  • Managing chronic health conditions and coping with their mental/emotional toll, including but not limited to:

    • Cancer (recent or past diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship issues)

    • Structural and Functional Gastrointestinal disorders, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), functional dyspepsia, and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD, Crohn's disease, Colitis)

    • Neuroimmune disorders, such as Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS)

    • Dysautonomia and associated conditions, such as Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS)

    • Chronic pain

  • Supporting parents as they adjust to the stress of parenting, from the child's birth through adulthood; supporting parents of children with chronic health conditions (including those listed above)

  • Anxiety and other mood disorders

I believe psychotherapy should be an interactive and time-limited endeavor.

This means that it is NOT my goal for us to meet indefinitely, but that we will identify specific and attainable treatment goals and work together to reach those specific goals using a prot0col-based approach.

A "typical" course of treatment with me might look something like this:

  • Sessions 1-3: Assessment (discussion of the issues that are bringing you to therapy, general history gathering, and discussion of treatment goals)

  • Sessions 3-4: I provide a menu of treatment options that usually include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based interventions, or other evidence-based treatments known to be effective in treating your presenting concern. For example, if you are coming to me for IBS, I might suggest incorporating gut-directed hypnotherapy.

  • Sessions 4+: We work towards the specific treatment goals identified during the assessment using the methods selected during collaborative treatment planning.

Depending on the scope of the goals for therapy and how we work, some clients find relief after a single session. If you select to follow a protocol exclusively, a course of therapy typically lasts 6-20 sessions. Most people choose to do "protocol-informed" work, where our approach is somewhat more free-form and the number of sessions more variable. The length of treatment depends heavily on how much we are trying to accomplish, how much work you are doing outside of session, and what occurs in your life for which you want additional support. For more information about the types of treatments that I offer, see What is "A Rooted Life?"

Telehealth

Laptop

The majority of my clients see me via telehealth. Our sessions are hosted on a HIPAA-compliant platform. Research supports that telehealth therapy is as effective as in-person sessions, and has the added benefit of being able to reach clients who might not otherwise have access to mental health resources.

I am licensed in Washington State, New York State, and am a member of PsyPact, which means that my clients can be located in any of the approved and active states listed here: https://psypact.org/mpage/psypactmap.

Mind-Body Practice

Yoga Mats

Health and wellness is a whole-body job. In addition to talking about thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, I rely on mindful body-based practices to provide a "felt-sense" of our interventions. These practices include diaphragmatic breathing, deep relaxation and self-hypnosis, and seated mindfulness practices. As desired, we can incorporate more specific movement or dietary factors.

Insurance:

I am paneled with Aetna and can only bill them if your sessions take place in Washington State or New York.

I am Out-of-Network for all other insurances. If your insurance provides "out-of-network benefits," your insurance might cover a portion of my fee. You will be responsible for the full session fee at the time of service, I will provide you a receipt for our session, and you can submit it to your insurance for reimbursement.

I strongly encourage you to also contact your insurance company by calling the customer service number listed on the back of your card to determine your benefits, if they offer out-of-network coverage, and if telemental health services are covered. I also recommend inquiring about how many mental health sessions are covered per year and at what rate (using the CPT codes listed above) so that you are fully informed about what your cost for therapy will be.
